This marks a notable shift from July when Independents were more\\nevenly split, with 45% backing Harris and 43% supporting Trump.\\n“Trump is losing support from Independents compared to July, which could be a result of the\\nDemocratic Party convention and remains to be watched,” said Dukhong Kim, Ph.D., associate\\nprofessor of political science at FAU. “If this pattern persists, it will be difficult for Trump to maintain an\\nadvantage in the election.”\\nCongressional Voting Preferences\\nThe poll shows that 46% of respondents would vote for the Democratic Party candidate in their district,\\ncompared to 44% for the Republican Party candidate.\\n“The generic ballot illustrates just how closely divided the nation continues to be,” said Kevin Wagner,\\nPh.D., professor of political science and co-director of the PolCom Lab. “It suggests that the current\\ndefault is for close and tightly contested elections.”\\nElection Anxiety: Mixed Emotions Ahead of 2024\\nThe poll reveals a stark emotional divide as the election approaches, with negative emotions slightly\\noutweighing positive ones by 44% to 41%. This emotional split becomes more pronounced when\\nviewed through the lens of voting intentions:\\nHarris supporters: 52% positive, 35% negative\\nTrump supporters: 34% positive, 49% negative\\nUndecided voters: 23% positive, 50% negative\\nNotably, 27% of Democrats reported feeling excited about the election, while 32% of Republicans\\nexpressed fear.\\n“While Democrats seem energized by the Harris-Walz ticket, there’s a significant undercurrent of\\nanxiety across the electorate,” said Carol Bishop Mills, Ph.D., professor of communication and co-\\ndirector of the PolCom Lab. “These findings highlight the intense political polarization and uncertainty\\nsurrounding this election.”\\nPerception of Candidates\\nOn the political spectrum, Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, representing the Democratic ticket,\\nare generally perceived as left-leaning. Harris is viewed as more strongly on the far left (37%),\\ncompared to Walz (28%). However, Walz is seen as more moderate, with 18% of voters placing him in\\nthe center, compared to fewer voters unsure of Harris’ position. These perceptions highlight\\nthe ideological divide between the two tickets.\\n“Although both Trump and Harris are similarly seen as conservative and liberal, respectively, Tim Walz\\nis viewed by voters as a more moderate candidate,” Wagner said. “That may change, but it does give\\nthe Democrats an opportunity to appeal to the center.”\\nParty Lines Define Satisfaction with U.S. Democracy\\nThe survey found that 46% of Americans are satisfied with how democracy works in the U.S., while 38%\\nare dissatisfied. However, the gap widens along party lines: 64% of Democrats express satisfaction\\ncompared to just 33% of Republicans.\\nDespite these differences, most Americans still believe in democratic principles. A strong 74% agree\\nthat democracy is the best system of government. This view is more common among older voters (81%\\nof those 50 and up) and Democrats (85%) than younger voters (65% of those under 50) and Republicans\\n(65%).\\n“The partisan and age splits on America’s democratic quality are concerning,” Kim said. “A substantial\\nportion of voters (38%) are either very dissatisfied or somewhat dissatisfied, which could have negative\\nimplications for the future of our democracy.”\\nSocial Media Influence Grows Among Young Voters\\nA significant portion of respondents rely on cable news (35%) and national network TV (24%) for\\npolitical information. However, a notable shift in voter consumption patterns is emerging, with social\\nmedia and podcasts becoming increasingly popular, especially among younger voters (20% for ages\\n18-49 vs. 7% for those 50+).\\n“This trend underscores the growing impact of social media influencers on public opinion,” said\\nRobert E. Gutsche, Jr., Ph.D., associate professor in FAU’s School of Communication and Multimedia\\nStudies. “With younger voters relying more on social media, the campaigns will have to reach them\\nthere.”\\nMethodology\\nThe poll surveyed 929 registered U.S. voters from Aug. 23 to 25, using a combination of Interactive\\nVoice Response and online panel methods. Conducted in both English and Spanish, the survey applied\\nweights for gender, race, education and past vote. Party identification was self-reported. A likely voter\\nscreen was applied based on respondents’ stated voting intentions. While a precise margin of error\\ncannot be calculated due to the mixed methodology, a comparable probability sample of this size\\nwould have a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. It’s far from a sure thing that\\nHarris will continue to rise through the end of August — though some\\nRepublicans are preparing for the possibility that Harris will have a larger lead\\non Labor Day than she does now — but adding a convention bump on top of\\nthat could position Harris as a significant favorite in the race.\\nAD\\nThat’s because, historically, voters’ preferences are typically all-but-solidified\\nat the conclusion of the conventions, and any changes in polling after the\\nconventions are typically modest. Because they don’t like or trust\\nhim more broadly.\\nIn the ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, Americans said they trust\\nTrump over Harris when it comes to dealing with the economy — which nearly\\nnine-in-10 respondents said was very important to their vote — 46 percent to\\n37 percent.\\nBut it’s clear why Harris leads after looking at the candidates’ personal\\nattributes.\\nPoll respondents are split on Harris’ image: 45 percent view the vice president\\nfavorably, while 44 percent view her unfavorably. For Trump, only 35 percent\\nhave a favorable opinion of him. The majority, 57 percent, view him\\nunfavorably.\\nAD\\nBack in July, Trump held a 31-point lead over Biden on the question of which\\ncandidate “is in good enough physical health to serve effectively as president.”\\nIn the new poll, the 78-year-old Trump is at a 30-point deficit on the same\\nquestion.\\nSimilarly, Harris, 59, leads Trump on which candidate “is honest and\\ntrustworthy” (by 15 points), “has the mental sharpness it takes to serve\\neffectively as president” (by 9 points), “understands the problems of people like\\nyou” (by 7 points) and “represents your personal values” (by 6 points).\\nThe Sun Belt is up for grabs again.\\nThe reasons for Harris’ competitiveness in the four Sun Belt swing states go\\nbeyond just the topline numbers. She’s attracting voters a Democratic\\ncandidate needs in younger, more diverse states.\\nIn the ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, Harris leads among those under\\nage 40, 57 percent to 37 percent, even though Biden and Trump were neck-\\nand-neck with the under-40 set last month.\\n📣 Want more POLITICO? In iOS or Android.\\nHarris is also outrunning Biden among Black (more on that below) and\\nHispanic voters, who make up large segments of the electorates in Arizona,\\nGeorgia, Nevada and North Carolina.\\nEven before the June debate, Biden’s decline was especially concentrated\\namong young and nonwhite voters, and many of those Sun Belt states looked\\nout of reach. A path to an Electoral College majority still existed if he ran the\\ntable in the Rust Belt, but Harris’ recovery gives her a chance to win even if\\nTrump picks off one of those northern states.\\nBlack voters have come back to Harris.\\nIn the ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, Black Americans broke for\\nHarris, 83 percent to 11 percent — far more in line with recent precedent. Same\\nwith the New York Times/Siena College Sun Belt-state polls, in which Harris\\nled, 84 percent to 11 percent, among Black likely voters.\\nAnd Suffolk University/USA Today polling of Black voters in Michigan and\\nPennsylvania shows Trump pulling in only about 10 percent among Black\\nvoters, about where he was in 2020.\\nThere are still some polls that show historically high support for Trump, as a\\nRepublican — like last week’s Fox News poll, which had the former president\\ncapturing 26 percent of Black voters. But generally speaking, the trend points\\nto Harris, who is of both Black and South Asian ancestry, winning a more\\ncomparable share of Black voters.\\nHarris is winning the “democracy” argument.\\nBiden grounded his campaign in the argument that democracy was at stake —\\nand threatened if Trump won the election.\\nHarris isn’t being as direct with her own messaging on the issue, but she’s still\\nbuilding an advantage over Trump. More than three-in-four Americans, 77\\npercent, say protecting democracy is at least very important to their vote in the\\nABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, below only the economy and inflation\\nand tied with health care and crime on the list of issues presented.\\n10/6/24, 7:26 AM\\nHarris’ momentum is growing. Similarly, Sun Belt-state likely voters gave Harris an 8-point edge\\nwhen it comes to handling democracy, 52 percent to 44 percent, in the New\\nYork Times/Siena College poll.\\nYes, the convention bump actually matters.\\nWhile it’s perhaps not surprising that candidates see their poll numbers go up\\nduring their party’s convention — a made-for-TV infomercial for them and\\ntheir policies — that doesn’t mean the conventions don’t matter.\\nTo that point, Harris — who leads Trump by 1.4 percentage points in the\\nRealClearPolitics polling average and 2.6 points in the FiveThirtyEight average\\n— enters her convention in a significantly weaker position than Biden in 2020,\\nbut a stronger position than Hillary Clinton in 2016.\\nClinton actually trailed Trump by less than a point in the RealClearPolitics\\naverage at the start of the 2016 Democratic convention because Trump was\\nenjoying his convention bounce (the conventions were on back-to-back weeks\\nin July 2016 because the Olympics, which were held in the Southern\\nHemisphere, began later in the summer than usual).\\nHistorically, a party gets about a 4-point bounce from its convention, according\\nto the book “The Timeline of Presidential Elections: How Campaigns Do (and\\nDo Not) Matter.” But these bounces don’t always cancel each other out — and,\\nmost importantly, the party that sees the greatest improvement during the\\nconventions “maintains its gain in the final week’s polls,” according to the\\nauthors, Robert S. The figurative US electoral battle is one they\\nneed not weigh in to while they’re consumed by real fighting at home.\\n10/6/24, 7:30 AM\\nWhat the world thought of Harris-Trump debate\\nhttps://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9wj9qejrpwo\\n2/6\\n\\n\\nIt’s President Zelensky himself who so far has gone furthest in articulating, albeit\\nsomewhat euphemistically, what a Trump victory would mean for Ukrainians.\\nSpeaking to the BBC in July, he said it would mean “hard work, but we are hard\\nworkers”.\\nAbdul memes follow Trump Taliban remarks\\nBy Lyse Doucet, chief international correspondent\\nAmerica’s longest war ended in August 2021 when it scrambled to pull out the last of\\nits troops, and evacuate thousands of civilians, as the Taliban swept into Kabul with\\nsurprising speed.\\nThat debacle made it into the debate and, not surprisingly, the issues were dodged,\\ndismissed, distorted.\\nHarris veered away from the question “do you bear any responsibility in the way that\\nwithdrawal played out?”.\\nAs a correspondent who followed the chaotic pullout closely, I never heard that the\\nvice-president was in the room when decisions were taken in those final fateful weeks.\\nBut she made it clear she agreed with President Biden’s decision to leave.\\nTrump boasted that he talked tough with “Abdul”, the “head of the Taliban” who is\\n“still the head of the Taliban.”\\nHe seemed to be referring to Abdul Ghani Baradar, who signed the withdrawal deal\\nwith the US. But he never headed the Taliban, and has been sidelined since the\\nTaliban takeover.\\nThe mention immediately prompted a wave of internet memes featuring “Abdul” with\\npeople named Abdul weighing in, and others asking “who is Abdul?”\\nBoth contenders focused on the flawed deal with the Taliban. The truth is that the\\nTrump team negotiated this exit plan; the Biden team hastily enacted it.\\nTrump said the deal was good because “we were getting out”.\\nThere were no good ways to go.
