[header] How to deal with the pain of a door being shut on your finger [title] Ice the injury. [step] For medical reasons explained in the next section, this is the first thing you should do after shutting a door on your hand. But, medical reasons aside, the cold from the ice will numb your hand if you keep it in place for long enough.

endings

  1. To use an ice pack or ice warm compress, place a small dollop of ice on your hand to numb it for 10 minutes. Take 3 or 4 ounces of frozen ice cubes and place them deep-within your hand.
  2. Here are some things you should do before icing your hand and removing the bandage wrap. [substeps] Get in the habit of wearing at least pants or leggings to protect your skin from the freezing heat.
  3. [substeps] Wrap a length of warm pads or gauze wrapped around your hand in a thin layer of ice. See the above step for more information on ice heating.
  4. Although the extreme cold will be uncomfortable or even painful at first, push through it and keep the ice in place. Eventually, you'll feel less sensation-including pain-in the iced area.
